How to Roll Back Miles on Mazda 2015 Cx 5
Best and Worst Years for Mazda CX-5
Since its debut in 2013, the Mazda CX-5 has become a popular compact crossover noted for its reliability and thoroughly enjoyable performance. Which model year is best for a used Mazda CX-5?
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 has received mostly positive marks across the board from owners and critics alike, much in part to its sporty styling, premium interior, and spirited handling.
Yet, with a starting price of just over $25,000 (reaching past $37,500 for the top-tier trim), not everyone can or wants to afford a new model. But that doesn't mean you should miss out on all the fun.
Here we'll cover the best and worst years for the Mazda CX-5 since its 2013 debut, analyzing each across categories like fuel efficiency, safety, reliability, and more.
Mazda CX-5 and Skyactiv Technology
In 2013, the first Mazda CX-5 rolled off the line as a compact crossover that could seat five. As an inaugural model, Mazda cut no corners. The CX-5 had the curves, contours, and spirit of a racy, major machine.
Of course, the brand-new model featured a new engine, transmission, body, and more. It was underpinned by the same–and also new–platform as the Mazda3 and Mazda6.
Skyactiv technology, which is Mazda's series of technologies developed to increase fuel efficiency and engine output, was an important impetus behind the major changes to the Mazda CX-5.
The CX-5's first-generation ran from the 2013 to 2016 model years. There were not many changes of importance during this era. Three engine options included the 2.0-liter I4, the 2.5-liter I4, and a 2.2-liter SkyActiveD diesel engine.
But the second-generation kicked off in 2017, and the CX-5 underwent its first major redesign. The new 2017 model featured a complete redesign: upgrades and updates include the interior, cabin sound reduction, refreshed technology, and addition of safety features.
Also, the infotainment system got bigger and more capable, and a rearview camera was added. On the downside, there was less cargo space and Mazda removed the manual transmission option.
In 2018 standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert were added, in addition to many other driver assistance features. The following year the Mazda CX-5 gained a turbocharged engine and diesel engine options; Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trims debuted.
Connectivity was improved with the addition of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Parking sensors and a surround-view parking camera system are also added.
Adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam headlights were added to standard features in 2020. And the turbocharged engine growled with extra torque.
The current 2021 model boasts smartphone integration as standard, more driver assistance features, and a larger infotainment screen. While the turbodiesel engine option was discontinued, a new Carbon Edition trim debuted.
Mazda CX-5: Powertrain Options
At launch the CX-5 was offered with just a single engine option, a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder delivering 155 horsepower.
A year later in 2014, Mazda would add a 2.5-liter inline-four engine to Touring and Grand Touring models. By the model's 2017 redesign, the 2.0-liter would disappear, replaced by a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter as the standard engine.
By 2019, the base 2.5-liter would remain, but a 227 horsepower 2.5-liter Turbo option would enter the fray on the Signature trim.
2019 also marked the first year of the 2.2-liter diesel engine option, which Motor Trend mentions as, "A little less slow than the numbers suggest, thanks to that wave of low-end torque you get right off the line. But from a 55-mph roll to pass slower traffic, it feels glacial."
Regardless, after 948 miles they were able to boast a 28.5 mpg average. Sadly, the diesel engine option left the U.S. market after the 2019 model year.
The 2021 Mazda CX-5 retains the same 2.5-liter as standard, offering the 2.5-liter Turbo on higher trims. The latter pushes out 227 hp on regular unleaded gasoline and 250 while running on premium.
Mazda CX-5: Fuel Efficiency Ratings
Every aspect of the vehicle was engineered to maximize driving dynamics and efficiency: from body construction and engine technology to the chassis and transmission. And this translates to impressive EPA-estimated MPG ratings.
In 2013, the CX-5 boasted the highest highway fuel economy of any SUV sold in North America — including hybrids — at 34 mpg. Its combined fuel economy of 29 mpg (FWD) and 27 mpg (AWD) also is the head of the crossover class.
While the 2.2-liter diesel engine only lasted for the 2019 model year, it was pretty efficient, boasting a combined city/highway mpg rating of 28 on AWD models, and 29 on FWD.
Today the 2021 CX-5 base model is rated at 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg while at highway speeds. The 2021 Turbo option gets 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway.
Mazda CX-5: Safety Ratings
The 2013 Mazda CX-5 came straight out of the gate with a solid four-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While the 2013 model year nearly received five stars, its rollover rating and four-star front-passenger crash ratings held it back.
It wasn't until the 2019 model year that the CX-5 would land (and hold up to present) the coveted five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, though its rollover rating remained at four.
As for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), they gave the CX-5 their highest rating of G for "Good," further labeling it a Top Safety Pick+ for its class.
Mazda CX-5: Problems & Reliability
So, how has the CX-5 fared in terms of problems and reliability? Well, pretty good early on, according to the NHTSA. In its 2013 debut year, just one recall was issued regarding corroded struts on the rear liftgate that may cause it to fall, possibly injuring anyone standing underneath.
As for complaints, 173 came in, with the bulk of them mentioning electrical system issues like stalling or not shutting off.
The final year of the first generation, 2016, had five issued recalls, including the previous liftgate issue. The other four include daytime running lights that may fail, steering loss due to a lack of bolt torque, a ruptured fuel filler pipe, and a windshield bracket that may detach. In terms of complaints, the 2016 model had 383, with electrical systems, exterior lighting, andpowertrain being the most common.
The first year of the second generation came in with just a single recall, and only 57 complaints. The recall was issued due to a trailer hitching wiring harness that may short circuit.
The 2019 model year CX-5 received a similar report, with just one recall being issued involving a software error that may cause the engine to stall. As for 2020, zero recalls have been sent out and only 21 complaints have been reported. Data for the 2021 model is not yet available.
What is the Best Year for the Mazda CX-5?
While the pre-2017 Mazda CX-5 is a very good car, the technology onboard is light and pales in comparison to the more recent models. In terms of getting the most tech and the best performance, we recommend the 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021 models. In particular, a well-equipped 2020 model.
We chose the 2020 model mostly because of its new assortment of standard safety features, including adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, and automatic high-beam headlights.
What is the Worst Year for the Mazda CX-5?
Generally speaking, it is a good idea to avoid the first year of a refresh. However, in this case, 2016 is the worst year for the Mazda CX-5 due to its five recalls and 383 complaints.
Mazda CX-5: The Bottom Line
Ultimately, it is hard to go wrong with the Mazda CX-5.
With outstanding reviews from auto journalists and owners alike, the small SUV is secure, affordable, has a luxe and comfortable interior, and handles beautifully. It is rare to find a vehicle that looks exciting but offers few surprises in terms of maintenance and reliability.
Mazda took a risk in the CX-5, and it was worth it. Not only did the CX-5 establish that a crossover can offer a more satisfying ride than a sedan or typical SUV, but that you could own one without breaking the bank.

Frequently Asked Questions
Sep 17, 2021
Are there any problems with the Mazda CX-5?
The Mazda CX-5 is a very reliable vehicle and they tend to hold up pretty well, but there are a few issues that are common across them over the years. The most common problems with the CX-5 involve the electrical system and the daytime lights failing prematurely. Mazda has issued a recall for this problem because it became very widespread and they are replacing the lights for free.
The next most common issue with the CX-5 involves the brakes. These have brake pads that seem to wear out prematurely based on reports from owners. The brake pads wearing out fast can lead to damage to your rotors and if your rotors do wind up damaged they will need to be replaced.
The final common problem with the CX-5 is that they are known to have a weak windshield. The windshield has been known to get stress cracks in it just from temperature changes which result in the windshield requiring a replacement. There are numerous reports of the issues from owners who were surprised to find their windshields cracked when they had taken no impacts.
How many years will a Mazda CX-5 last?
The Mazda CX-5 can last a very long time, a CX-5 should be good to over 200,000 miles. If you drive 15,000 miles per year that gives you a minimum life span of at least 13 years. Chances are if you take care of the car then it can last much longer than that. There are plenty of vehicles from Mazda that are over 20 years old and still out on the road today.
Mazda has had a reputation for making great quality vehicles ever since they started producing their own engines and transmissions when their partnership with Ford ended. This has resulted in them having some of the longest-running cars on the market.
If you want an SUV that can last a long time then the CX-5 is one to check out. It can last just as long as the competition from the other major Japanese brands.
Is a Mazda CX-5 expensive to maintain?
The Mazda CX-5 is very affordable when it comes to maintenance costs. The average annual costs for maintenance on a CX-5 are $400 to $450 depending on the labor rates in your area. This is below the national average of $500 to $700 across all of the makes and models on the market.
The most expensive components to repair and replace on a vehicle are engine and transmission parts, and Mazda has a reputation for making great engines and transmissions that do not wind up failing. This results in the vehicles being able to last a long time without needing any expensive services.
The Mazda CX-5 also comes with a 2.5L 4 cylinder engine which is cheaper to maintain than V6 and larger engines. The smaller engine size means that it will need less oil and coolant than engines found in the competition. If you want a car that is affordable to own then a CX-5 is a great one to take a look at.

The 2018 Mazda cx-5 is a car that really outshines it is competitors.
I am really a fan of the vehicle I currently an leasing. The 2018 Mazda cx-5 handles like a dream. I honestly have never driven a car that turns on a dime and that just feels this good to be in. I love that the car has sensors for other vehicles that are on my right and left. They are sort of like blind-spot detectors and the car give a non-distracting small beep when there is a car on either side of me, which helps tremendously when merging. The model I have, has a sport mode, which honestly just makes the car handle so much smoother. This car is such a dream to be in and to drive. I am able to connect my phone to the car via Bluetooth enabling me to manage my music and also make telephone calls as well.

Many problems with my 2016 CX-5
2 weeks after getting this vehicle I had problems with it. The electrical system of the car wasn't working they towed my car to the closest dealership and i had a rental for 2 weeks. 2 years later and 80,000kms The Center console latch broke it's a plastic clip and My check engine light would turn on and then turn off randomly. I didn't get it check right away because I thought it wouldn't be a big deal if it turned off on it's own. Finally I had it checked out and found out my catalytic converter was broken and with further examination they found that my gasket was broken. I really don't understand how such a new vehicle can have so many problems.

2018 Mazda CX-5 Touring Review on comfort and safety.
Mazda vehicles are highly rated for safety and performance. My CX-5 Touring gets great gas mileage and provides a smooth, comforting ride. I do wish that the trunk had a automatic button to open rather than the manual pull to release option. I am also not a huge fan of the overly cautious safety response that brakes for you while driving. The car doesn't judge distance quite like a human would which could cause an accident from unnecessary braking.

In love with my 2018 Mazda CX-5
Smooth riding, has the feel of a bigger vehicle. Gas mileage is good for a small SUV. Love the driver assist cruise control. It reads your text messages and voicemail, which is very convenient. Comfortable seating. Sound system is great. Love the feature where the remote key never has to leave your purse, including locking the car. You just walk away. My only criticism is the rear hatch only open if vehicle is shut off. Overall I love this vehicle.

My 2018 Mazda cx-5 is the most reliable car I have owned.
The lights in the dash clearly indicate when something is wrong or in need of attention, and it is easy to tell what the different lights mean. In addition, the sport mode takes the experience to a whole new level. You are able to take off quickly, while still maintaining control of the vehicle. I also love the unique Mazda red that I chose for the paint. It is so special that it puts even the most high-end red vehicles to shame!

2019 Mazda cx-5: a wonderful and safe crossover SUV.
The only issue I have had with this car is if it is foggy out sometimes the sensors in front do not work, which means I am not able to use cruise control when that is happening. Other than that, this car is safe and reliable. I really love the adaptable cruise control, it speeds up and slows down with traffic. I also like the lane departure warnings that tells me if there is a car in the area when I try to change lanes.

2018 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring
I love my cx-5! It drives like a luxury car, and for it being a small SUV its great on gas, I enjoy having a sport mode and sunroof, and the automatic lock when you get out of the car and walk away and great to have. My only complaint is that the headrest is a little awkward. The cx 5 is so safe the early break system and autopilot make it effortless for long highway drives.

2018 Mazda cx-5 grand touring review.
I absolutely love my Mazda cx-5. It rides very smooth and has all of the safety capabilities that I need. My favorite feature is the heads up display. It is one of the things that I cannot believe I didn't have before as I rely on it so much now. There is not really anything that I would change about this car. It feels like a luxury vehicle for a fraction of the price.

Mazda cx-5 2020 feature highlights.
Great performance and reliability. Seats are comfortable and easily adjusted. Features include lane assist, blind spot monitoring, and backup camera. There is a sports mode that allows you to speed up quickly. There is also a hold feature that prevents your car from rolling forward when foot is not on gas pedal. I have found this useful in traffic and drive thrus.

2018 Mazda cx-5 review- definitely worth it.
Comfort is great and it is extremely fun to drive. Also lots of safety features such as smart cruise control. I also appreciate the AWD that I got on my vehicle, as we take the vehicle to Tahoe quite a bit. I would definitely suggest going with the mica blue color as it is dark, but does not show dirt much. Also the touchless, speak navigation is fantastic.

2015 CX5
Love driving my CX5. When I was SUV shopping I wanted to see all cars available and went to all lots. Of all the SUVs I looked at I narrowed it down to the CX5 and another brand. CX5 much better on handling and very good on gas mileage. There weren't many CX5s on the road in Dec 2014 when I bought my car but now I see lots of them when I go out. Great car.

I love my 2019 Mazda cx 5! It is sleek & modern looking. I highly recommend it.
Best vehicle I have ever owned! Reliable, beautiful and great gas mileage! This is my second cx 5 and I would definitely consider another one. It is also a very smooth and quiet ride. The interior is sleek and modern. The extra features are easy to use and help me with my business and personal use. I love the hands free liftgate! Love my cx 5.

2018 Mazda cx-5 grand touring is a must buy!
The 2018 Mazda cx-5 grand touring is top notch. It has blind spot motion sensors, lane departure sensor, and brake sensors. The car vibrates when you depart a lane without putting on your blinker. There is an auto windshield wiper function that will turn on when it starts raining. All seats have warmers as well as a steering wheel warmer.
Annie W on June 19, 2021
Loving my 2020 Mazda cx-5, and you will too!
I love this car. It is got a sleek look to it, and drives incredibly smooth. For an SUV the gas mileage is not bad at all. The apple play and easy to use media board are a few of the perks of this model. I have only had one issue with a nail in my tire but my nearest Mazda dealer fixed it at no cost. I highly recommend!

We love our 2018 Mazda cx-5!
We have experienced no problems with our Mazda. We have owned three Mazdas, and this one is our favorite. It is comfortable, sporty, peppy and fun to drive. It also has some great safety features, including a backup camera, multiple airbags, lane correction and a flat tire alarm (that we have already used). Great SUV!
Allie J on July 3, 2021
We love our 2018 Mazda CX-5.
Very reliable and gets great gas mileage for a crossover. The backup camera is great. We love the heated seats and heated steering wheel, also the dual temperature. Very comfortable, especially for long road trips. The lane assist and beeping whenever the car in front of us brakes suddenly makes it seem very safe.
Nicole W on October 17, 2021
Interior of 2016 Mazda cx-5 is disappointing.
Poor reliability with interior has fallen apart with normal use requiring expensive repairs. Bluetooth capabilities are inconsistent for a 4 year old vehicle. I overall would not recommend this car to a friend or family member. Interior improvements would be necessary to keep the car for more than another year.
Elizabeth M on October 7, 2021
I love the 2019 Mazda cx-5.
The features are great: leather seats, heated seats, lane assist. The only issue we have had is that our stereo, touch screen system sometime stalls or freezes. It is a quick reset but can be frustrating when driving. The car is very spacious and we have never had an issue with passengers in our back seat.
Toni H on September 15, 2021
2020 cx-5 sport - great new upgrades.
The car picks up very well, especially in sport mode. The new driver assist feature is awesome. I also love that the 2020 is quieter than the older models. The new interior design is very sleek, attractive and more spacious. The bucket seats are soft and comfortable. Great sound system as well.
James D on August 28, 2021
Cx-5 2019 - great car that will last for many years.
Top reason I purchased was the safety features. Car has a great auto brake feature if you cannot break in time. Plenty of car space and seats can all go on. Overall physical look of the car is modern and has good lines. After 20k miles, no issues to report. I would call this car very reliable.
Daniel L on August 9, 2021
2018 Mazda cx-5 grand touring AWD better than competitors.
Cons; the 2018 to open the tailgate the vehicle must be in park and off, cannot have the vehicle on and in park to open the gate. Center cup holders awkwardly placed too far back. Forearm will always hit drinks, straws, etc... Pros; other than the cons listed above this vehicle is phenomenal!
Maddy K on August 28, 2021
Mazda cx-5 best car of 2020.
Absolutely love this car. It looks really nice, has great speakers and Bluetooth system. Super comfortable and very reliable. Haven't had any issues in the year I have had it. Seat warmers, sunroof, and sound system was definitely worth the upgrade to the touring instead of the sport.
Diane G on July 19, 2021
Love my 2019 Mazda cx-5 sport!
Really love this vehicle! I have had no problems. There is plenty of room for my 2 dogs to ride and plenty of storage in the trunk. It has great gas mileage and rides beautifully. It has very comfortable and roomy seating. Out of all the cars that I have owned, this is my favorite!

2020 cx 5 - a great crossover for the price!
Love the car, not as comfortable as I would prefer however. The car lags a bit even in sport mode though. The cabin is a bit noisy but to be expected for the price. Feels luxurious and looks fantastic on the road. Bose sound system is fabulous, I feel expensive in this car.

2018 Mazda cx 5 highlighting interior features and ride.
Bluetooth compatible with phone with call buttons on steering column. Controls for radio and navigation by gear shift. Navigation maps need updates. Radio skips at times. Smooth ride. Able to haul things if needed. Good pickup when entering highways. Good braking.

I love the new 2018 Mazda cx 5.
I love the leather and suede seats - I like the console with the electronics. I really like the lane control monitoring and the front end protection and backup camera. The color is nice, the handling is very smooth and you can set it up to lock once you walk away.

Running Lights Expensive Fix On 2016 CX-5
Enjoyed the car handling and looks ($30,000 price tag), But the running lights in the housing assembly is one whole unit, when the running lights go out, you will have to pay $1,000 per each light assembly, my vehicle is 3 years old with 40k miles.

I love my Mazda CX5 2017. I traded in a 2018 Mercedes SUV and this car has way more features such as a touchscreen a Bose radio system and it handles so much better. The best downgrade I've ever done
Linda S on December 9, 2021
Has the latest safety features which is why we bought the 2018 model.
Like all the safety features. Handles like a car. Love the color. Only thing I don't like is the answer back horn when locking the car - can't lower the volume.

Review of the 2018 Mazda C-X5
Excellent performance. I-stop feature is a gas saver during traffic. Very stylish as well, looks good without breaking the bank. No major issues

E brake failure on 2016 Mazda CX-5
E brake module failure. Shorted electrical system. Same issue as Mazda 6 but Mazda won't recall the cx5. Car has 49k mile. NO help from Mazda.
